How much snow fell during March 14-16 blizzard in Central Wisconsin?

Snow total reports from the March 14-16 snowstorm show double-digit snowfall amounts in central Wisconsin, with more than 20 inches of snow falling in some areas and one report of more than 30 inches of snow.

Roy Eckberg, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Green Bay, told USA TODAY Network Wisconsin reporters that some areas of central Wisconsin will get another inch or two of snow on March 16 before tapering off by early afternoon.

Ekberg said the city of Wausau saw a record-breaking daily snowfall of 23.4 inches on March 15, breaking the previous record of 6 inches set in 1959.

In addition to the snow, the storm brought strong winds with gusts of 40-50 mph. Ekberg said the area will continue to experience wind gusts of 35-40 mph on the morning of March 16, with the storm gradually weakening in the afternoon.

The first round of heavy snowfall ended in the afternoon of March 15, and the second round of snowfall continued at night until March 16. The National Weather Service received observations of snowfall totals after noon on March 15 and slowly updated them during the morning of March 16.

Ekberg said the final snowfall total report for the three-day snowstorm will be released on March 17.

Ekberg said temperatures will continue to be cold on March 17, with temperatures expected to warm into the 30s on March 18 and into the 40s on March 19 and 20. Rising temperatures will cause snow to melt later this week and increase the risk of flooding.
