How much rain fell in Eugene-Springfield? Is more rain coming?

Rainfall totals in the Eugene area on December 18 were 2.75 inches, breaking the previous record of 1.52 inches set on December 18, 2018.

The rain caused two river floods in Lane County: the Siuselaw River in Mapleton, which peaked at 21.6 feet at 4 a.m., and the Mohawk River near Springfield, which was expected to peak at 16.32 feet at 4 p.m. Flooding is considered flooding when the Siuselaw River reaches 18 feet, and when the Mohawk River reaches 15 feet.

Mike McGillivray with Springfield Public Works said flooding from the river did not translate into flooding in the city itself. He said so far, crews have only heard of one incident of flooding on Centennial Avenue in Springfield, which they have addressed.

He said if Springfield residents notice more flooding, they should report it by calling 541-726-3761 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., or 541-726-3714 (the police non-emergency line) after hours.

Rainfall also broke records last night in Portland, Salem and Hillsborough. Of the four cities, Salem was hit hardest, with 2.93 inches of rain. Although not setting records, southwest Oregon also saw rainfall amounts, including 0.84 inches in Roseburg and 2.27 inches in Drain. The coast wasn’t left out, with 1.51 inches of rain falling in Mapleton and 1.92 inches in North Bend.
