Although Bulls guard Mike McClung scored 54 points, Newell scored 17 points in the fourth quarter and overtime to help the Skyhawks overcome an 18-point deficit. He scored the game-winning dunk in overtime, hitting the target.
Newell’s performance with the Hawks was inconsistent, appearing in 40 games under coach Quin Snyder, averaging 5 points and 2 rebounds per game. After scoring 12 points and 10 rebounds on October 25, he was one of 23 rookies to achieve a double-double this season.
The 20-year-old averaged 22.2 points, 8.4 rebounds and 2.5 assists while shooting 57.5% from the field in 10 games for the Skyhawks. He has recorded four double-doubles, including 29 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists in a loss to the Maine Celtics on January 21.

With playing time at a premium, Newell has the opportunity to extend his playing time and maintain a rhythm on the court. The organization may offer him the opportunity to continue with the Skyhawks for the remainder of the G-League season.
