The Houston Texans have parted ways with quarterbacks coach Jerrold Johnson, a source told the Houston Chronicle.
Johnson has served in the role since 2023 when DeMeco Ryans took over as head coach. His main responsibility is to help develop C.J. Stroud, whom he met when Stroud was a junior in high school.

But both Johnson and the Texans offense want to move forward. The move comes ahead of the combine.
Senior offensive assistant and pass rush specialist Jerry Schuplinski, who serves as offensive coordinator Nick Caley’s right-hand man, is expected to add the role of quarterbacks coach to his responsibilities, sources said.
Johnson is a Houston native who played college football at Texas A&M. When he was hired, he was considered a promising young coach with a bright future.
He remains highly regarded as he interviewed for several open offensive coordinator positions this recruiting cycle. He helped Stroud have one of his best rookie seasons ever in 2023. However, he struggled in his second season.

The move, while significant, is not surprising. Stroud showed improvement in 2025, but he had four interceptions in the team’s playoff loss to the Patriots. This is arguably the Texans’ biggest move of the 2026 offseason as they try to improve their offense.
