Hollow Knight: Silksong’s first major expansion will be released next year, developer Team Cherry announced on Tuesday. The studio confirmed that the expansion, titled Sea of Sorrows, will be free for all Silksong players. Team Cherry also announced that it is developing an updated version of Hollow Knight for Nintendo Switch 2.
The developer has shared a trailer for the Sea of Sorrow expansion for Hollow Knight: Silk Song, showcasing the artwork included in the free DLC. Team Cherry said in an update on its website that work on the expansion is “well underway.”
The studio didn’t reveal details about the DLC, but confirmed it will be “nautical themed.” Sea of Sorrow will include new areas, bosses, tools, and more. Team Cherry says more information about the expansion will be shared closer to launch.
Hollow Knight comes to Switch 2
The independent developer also announced that the first Hollow Knight will be coming to Nintendo Switch 2. The studio says it’s “hard at work” developing an updated version of the critically acclaimed game for the new consoles.
The updated version will include all the updates and enhancements that Hollow Knight: Silk Song received on Switch 2. These include high frame rate modes, higher resolutions and additional graphical effects.
A Switch 2 version of Hollow Knight will also be released in 2026. Team Cherry has confirmed that players who own Hollow Knight on Nintendo Switch will be able to download the Switch 2 version for free. The studio says that with the release of Switch 2, all versions of Hollow Knight will be updated for the current platform, adding new features and fixing bugs.
Hollow Knight players on PC can try out some of these features now. The update is released via a public beta on Steam and GOG. It includes 16:10 and 21:9 aspect ratio support for Steam Decks or ultrawide monitors, as well as a series of fixes and improvements.
Hollow Knight: Silk Song sells 7 million copies
Team Cherry also expressed its gratitude to players for the successful launch of Hollow Knight: Silk Song. The studio confirmed that the game has sold more than 7 million copies across platforms, while millions of people are playing it for free on Xbox Game Pass.
“The number of players is truly staggering and beyond our expectations (enough to crash all stores!),” the developer said. “Watching the community grow and seeing the amazing art, mods, unexpected strategies, and support among players in the game’s challenges has been hugely rewarding for us at home. Your continued enthusiasm remains a huge motivator as we work to further expand the game.”
Hollow Knight: Silk Song releases on September 4th on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X, Nintendo Switch, and Switch 2. On the day the game was released, many storefronts crashed as a large number of users rushed to download the game.
