Heritage Christian College has issued a public statement after concerns were raised within the congregation about a registered sex offender on church property.
In a press release, Pastor Eric Crawford explained why he allowed his son, a registered sex offender, to assist with maintenance and music work around the church. The pastor said his son’s legal proceedings ended several years ago.
“My intention is to put his talents to the service of the department while ensuring that he does not assume any responsibility or authority over the minors entrusted to our care,” Crawford said.
Caleb Crawford, 31, is accused of molesting a child in a sexual act dating back to 2016, according to court documents. No further information about his charges was available because court documents were sealed.
Pastor Crawford has reversed his decision, saying his son will no longer lead music and his maintenance contract has been terminated, according to the release. He went on to say that this would allow his son to attend church services if he chose, but would not be allowed to serve in any volunteer or ministry capacity.
“Heritage Baptist Church and its associated ministries do not conceal criminal conduct, and we maintain zero tolerance for crime or misconduct within our ministry community. In accordance with mandatory reporting laws, we report any suspicion of abuse or misconduct of a minor to the appropriate authorities,” Crawford said.
According to the church, employees and volunteers are rigorously screened and have strict policies and procedures in place that comply with federal and Texas law.
Crawford said the church remains fully committed to operating in a safe, responsible and legal manner to strengthen unity and trust within the church and school communities.
