Ghost of Yotei Sony’s ‘Strongest’ PS5 Launch Since Spider-Man 2, Sells 1.6 Million Copies: Report

Ghost of Tsushima, the sequel to Sucker Punch and Ghost of Tsushima, released last week, is said to have sold more than 1.6 million copies. The action-adventure game is currently only available on PS5 and is said to be Sony’s “strongest” first-party PS5 game since 2023’s “Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.” Allegedly, Ghost of the Rampant recouped a reported $60 million development budget the day after its launch.

This information comes from market research company Alinea Analytics. Figures released by the company in a newsletter on Thursday indicate that Soul of the Tomb Raider is one of Sony’s most successful first-party games of the PS5 generation. The game has reportedly sold over 1.6 million copies to consumers. If sales to retailers are taken into account, the game has reportedly sold over 2 million copies.

Considering the game’s $70 price tag, it has already generated revenue of nearly $100 million (approximately Rs. 886 crore). According to the company, Ghost of Yotei recouped its alleged $60 million (roughly Rs. 532 crore) development budget just one day after its launch. However, its sales were slower than its predecessor, Ghost of Tsushima, which sold 2.4 million copies in just three days.

Soul of the Rams is selling faster than Assassin’s Creed: Shadows

In addition, “Yotei” is said to be selling 1.5 times faster than “Assassin’s Creed: Shadows” released by Ubisoft in March. Digital copies reportedly account for 77% of the game’s sales so far. There also seems to be a large number of returning players from Ghost of Tsushima. According to Alinea’s data, 93% of “Ghost of Yotei” players have played “Ghost of Tsushima”.

These sales figures indicate a huge success for developer Sucker Punch, and a quick return on investment for Sony. The sheep’s trotters have only been available for a week, and with its strong response, sales are likely to increase in the coming days.

The game is still a long way from matching its predecessor in commercial performance. As of September 2024, “Ghost of Tsushima” has sold more than 13 million copies. However, it’s worth noting that Ghost of Tsushima’s sales got a boost as more people stayed at home and played games due to the Covid-19 lockdown. Tsushima also released on PS4, which had a larger install base than PS5, and then got PS5 and PC versions via the Director’s Cut.

Soul of the Rams will be released on PS5 on October 2. technology shout’s 8/10 review of the game praised the game’s visuals, combat, and open-world exploration, but called the game’s story safe and predictable.
