FSU outlasts Wake Forest in pitcher’s duel, clinches series

The Florida State baseball team won its first ACC series of the season on Saturday, beating Wake Forest 2-0, as the Seminoles’ offense got the win on a home run by Nathan Cmeyla and an RBI by Eli Putnam, while their pitching once again shut out the Demon Deacons.

Florida State’s bats didn’t start Friday night’s game, with the entire order failing to reach base as the Seminoles hit a three-on-three-down trio in the first three innings.

Trey Beard, making his third start of the season for the Seminoles, started his first six batters with a retirement and struck out five of them. Both teams’ first base runners of the day drew two-out walks in the bottom of the third inning, but Beard struck out his seventh batter to keep the deadlock alive.

Miles Bailey loaded the bases in the top of the fourth, but the Seminoles again failed to get a hit.

Beard continued his impressive performance with three more hits and two more strikeouts.

After a Brayden Dowd flyout in the fifth inning, Nathan Cmeyla got his first hit and first run of the game, a home run to deep right field to give FSU a 1-0 lead. Eli Putnam reached base on a dribble and advanced after Cal Fisher was walked, but John Suetzer’s grounder ended the inning.

Wake made his best breakout attempt in the bottom of the sixth inning, with a runner going all the way to third but stranded.

Will Bavaro had another hit in the seventh inning, just the third of four hits for FSU on Saturday, capped off by Putnam’s RBI single in the top of the ninth.

Beard went 6.2 innings for Florida State, facing 22 batters, striking out 14 (a career high) and giving up one hit. John Abraham faced eight batters and struck out two in 2.1 innings.

FSU will conclude its series against Wake Forest tomorrow at 4 p.m., which will be broadcast live on the ACC Network.
