From net bowler to Rs 1 crore pick, LSG’s Naman Tiwari eyes IPL debut

LUCKNOW: Naman Tiwari, who worked as a spinner for the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) for the past two seasons, was finally acquired by the franchise for Rs 1 crore in the Indian Premier League (IPL) mini-auction. The pacer is now eager to play in the IPL, which is scheduled to begin on March 28.

Even though the team has a strong Indian bowling unit led by the experienced Mohammad Shami, Mayank Yadav, Avish Khan and Mohsin Khan, the city lad is still hopeful of making his debut.

In an interview with TOI, Naman shared his experience in the pre-IPL training camp. “This is my first season after two years as a net bowler. Earlier, I was on the other side of the boundary; now I’m on this side of the rope, so it’s been a positive experience,” he said.

Asked about his interactions with LSG global director of cricket Tom Moody, head coach Justin Langer and bowling coach Bharat Arun, Tiwari said: “My idea from the beginning has been to maintain a high level of execution because you will only get picked if you are skilled. It’s about putting the ball in the right place under pressure. That’s the main thing you learn, whether it’s Mr. Bharath, Justin Langer or Tom Moody.”

Talking about his priorities, the left-arm pacer said: “Fitness is very important and I am currently focusing on workouts, exercises and fitness sessions to achieve full fitness and optimal physical condition. You can compromise on technique but not on fitness.”

Talking about his recent performance, Naman said he feels good and is bowling well. “I took a hat-trick in the DY Patil tournament and took four wickets, including a hat-trick, in the semi-finals. In Chennai, I trained with Bharat sir and prepared for the same in the DY Patil tournament. It was a good tournament to play in before the IPL,” he added.
