After two weeks away from the Spanish Grand Prix, Formula 1 will return to the Canadian Grand Prix for the eighth round of the 2023 F1 Championship. The F1 race weekend starts on Friday, June 16 and runs until Sunday, June 18. In addition to the main race, the competition also includes weekend warm-up, three practice sessions and qualifying held during the weekend. Red Bull Racing continues to lead the championship, with Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez also occupying the top two spots in the drivers’ championship.
Max Verstappen won the Spanish Grand Prix after qualifying first to complete the third ‘grand slam’ of his career – taking pole position, leading every lap, securing the fastest lap and winning the race. Mercedes recovered, with Lewis Hamilton and George Russell finishing second and third respectively, while Sergio Perez finished fourth after starting 11th on the grid.
No series is held during the Canadian Grand Prix, with only the F1 race scheduled to take place at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal, Canada. The purpose-built circuit was completed in 1978 and subsequently named after Gilles Villeneuve. Gilles Villeneuve is a successful Canadian F1 driver and the father of 1997 world champion Jacques Villeneuve.

2023 Canadian Formula 1 Grand Prix: What to expect
Max Verstappen’s lead in the drivers’ championship continues to expand after the 2023 Spanish Grand Prix, with a gap of 53 points over second-placed Sergio Perez. Fernando Alonso held on to third place despite finishing seventh in his home Grand Prix in Spain, while fourth-placed Lewis Hamilton wasn’t too far behind after finishing second in Spain. While the World Championship is still up in the air, the competition appears to be focused on the remaining podium spots.
Ferrari’s woes continue as the team fails to become competitive in 2022. Driver Charles Leclerc, who finished second last year, is seventh and his teammate Carlos Sainz is sixth. Despite qualifying second in Spain, Sainz finished in fifth, a sign that Ferrari currently lacks the pace to compete with Red Bull and Mercedes.
Circuit Gilles Villeneuve has been a regular track during the F1 season since it opened in 1978, except for a few gaps when no races were held due to protocol issues or the Covid-19 pandemic. The annual game is one of Canada’s most popular sporting events. Although this is a purpose-built track, the obstacles are located close to the track, which often surprises experienced riders. However, recent changes to the layout and obstacles have made the race faster and safer.
