Former Washington Commanders offensive lineman Trey Johnson died Sunday, the team announced.
He is 54 years old.
Further details are unclear, but he died “suddenly and unexpectedly” while on a family trip after recent health problems.
“If you knew Trey, you know what a devoted and loving father he was to his children,” his wife, Irene, wrote. “Tre’ lived for his children’s athletic activities and supported them at every practice and game until his last breath. He shared his passion for Frenchie and riding his motorcycle with me and his fellow riders.”
Johnson was drafted by Temple with the 31st overall pick in the 1994 NFL Draft and spent the majority of his NFL career in Washington. He was a fixture on the team’s offensive line for many years, earning his only Pro Bowl nomination during the 1999 season. The team achieved a record of 10 wins and 6 losses that season and entered the playoffs.

Johnson left the team for one season in 2001 when he joined the Cleveland Browns, but he played in only three games due to a right knee injury. In 2002, he returned to Washington for his final season. During his nine-year NFL career, Johnson played in a total of 93 games.
Johnson retired as a history teacher in Washington, D.C. His wife, Irene, also worked as a photographer for several area news organizations. The couple has four children.
