A man filmed the tragic moment a small plane crashed directly into the Amazon River.
In dramatic footage taken by Fernando Araújo while jet skiing in the area, a plane can be seen flying dangerously low over the water. The camera cuts to the plane tilting to one side and then plunging directly into the river, causing a huge splash.
Araujo, the architect, told People magazine that the plane appeared to be performing “landing and takeoff maneuvers,” and the strange movements prompted him to start documenting them.
“Suddenly, the plane turned right, as if about to land for a third time, and the plane quickly lost altitude and crashed into the river,” he explained. Araujo said the incident on January 4 occurred in the Rio Negro River, a tributary of the Amazon River near the Brazilian city of Manaus.

Later in the video, the plane can be seen floating in the water, while other witnesses rushed to the scene in jet skis and boats.
“We were the first to reach the scene and rescued the two people from the water,” he added. “More rescuers arrived shortly after and the injured were transferred to a small boat and taken to the beach for first aid. I’m told both men are doing well.”
Araujo said the pilot had “two deep cuts on his forehead,” while the passenger had “a smaller cut on his forehead and a stab wound on his inner thigh.”
He also shared a video of the incident on Instagram, noting in the caption that he helped provide aid after arriving at the scene.
