earthquake safety
While it can be difficult to prepare for an earthquake in advance, it’s important to know what to do if one occurs.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that you should immediately get down on your hands and knees, place your head and neck under sturdy furniture, and hold onto shelter.
If you can’t get down to the ground or hide under a shelter, the CDC recommends sitting or remaining seated. You should find something to protect your head and neck, such as a large book, a pillow, or your arms.
If you are outside when the earthquake starts, it is best to get to an open area away from trees, power poles, and buildings. However, if you are indoors during an earthquake, you should stay indoors.
after earthquake
After the initial earthquake, aftershocks may still occur. The CDC says you should avoid taking elevators because of possible power outages. Gas or water pipes can also burst, causing potential hazards.
If you are on the coastline after an earthquake, get to higher ground immediately and move inland as the earthquake may trigger a tsunami.
There may be falling debris and other hazards in the area, so the CDC says you may need to walk. If you are in a moving vehicle, they recommend that you stop the vehicle as quickly and safely as possible and apply the parking brake. If a fallen power cord lands on your car, you should remain in the vehicle until a trained person can remove the cord.
