Florida football adds Kentucky transfer defensive back Cam Dooley

Kentucky sophomore defensive back Cam Dooley committed to the Florida Gators on Wednesday.

Dooley, a former four-star recruit, signed with Kentucky as a member of the Class of 2024, according to 247Sports. He played under current Florida State assistant coaches Brad White and Chris Collins. As a true freshman, he played in all 12 games for the Wildcats, recording four tackles and one tackle for a loss. However, only 31 of his 154 total snaps that season were defensive.

As a sophomore, Dooley played a key role in Kentucky’s defensive back rotation, starting the final three games of the season. Of his 546 total snaps, 211 came at free safety, 134 in the box and 62 at corner. That makes him a prime candidate for the star job at Florida State.

“Pro Football Focus” gave him an overall defensive grade of 69.3, a run defense grade of 63.6, a rushing grade of 58.0, a pass rush grade of 56.8, and a coverage grade of 71.4. In 2025, Dooley allowed just 80 receiving yards and zero touchdowns. He totaled 30 tackles (20 solo), 1 tackle for a loss, 1 interception, 1 forced fumble and 1 fumble recovery.

247Sports gives Dooley a three-star transfer grade, ranking him No. 585 overall and No. 60 among safeties in the transfer portal. On3 is more optimistic about him, giving him a four-star rating and ranking him at 273rd and 26th respectively.

Florida State returns starting free safety Bryce Thornton and has secured a commitment from Baylor safety DJ Coleman, who will likely compete for the starting strong safety job. As mentioned above, Dooley is a candidate to play the STAR/Nickel linebacker position.

Rising sophomores Lagunza Hayward and Derek Stubbs also return for the Gators. Florida State will also add JUCO safety Elijah Owens. Incoming freshmen Kaiden Hall and Dylan Purter signed with the program in December.

What’s new in Florida’s 2026 transfer portal

Dooley is Florida’s 14th official transfer portal prospect for the 2026 cycle.

On the offensive side, Georgia Tech quarterback Aaron Philo, Cincinnati running back Evan Pryor, Georgia Tech wide receiver Bailey Stockton, Wake Forest receiver Micah Mays Jr., James Madison tight end Lakota Dupree and Penn State offensive linemen Egan Boyer and TJ Shanahan are all on the field.
