Jon Sumrall will hire Phil Trautwein to be the Florida Gators’ next offensive line coach, On3’s Pete Nakos reports.
Trautwein played at Florida State from 2005-08, winning two national championships and serving as a team captain for two seasons. He was selected as the SEC’s best left tackle and earned first-team honors in 2008. Before starting his coaching career, Trautwein played four seasons in the NFL.

He spent the past six seasons as the offensive line coach with the Penn State Nittany Lions. Trautwein began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Boston College in 2013 before transferring to Davidson in 2016 as tight ends coach. He also served as special teams coordinator alongside Davidson in 2017. He then returned to Boston College as offensive line coach.
Trautwein is considered a strong recruiter, making him a great addition to Sumrall’s staff. Florida State has struggled to secure commitments from elite offensive line recruits under the past two coaches. Trautwein should attract that kind of talent, having produced 31 all-conference prospects since 2020 and producing the second-most NFL draft picks (7) on the offensive line.
Penn State linebacker Olaivavega Ioane is expected to be selected in the first round of the upcoming NFL draft cycle.
