Flick explains the thinking behind Barcelona squad selection for Guadalajara win

Barcelona coach Hansi Flick made a cautious assessment after beating Guadalajara in the last 32 of the Copa del Rey.

While the scoreline was a comfortable 2-0 victory, the reality on the pitch told a more difficult story.

Facing determined opposition from La Liga, Barcelona far exceeded expectations and only found a way out in the final stages of the game.

Looking back on his performance after the final whistle, Flick highlighted what was most important to him that night, saying:

“I’m very happy with the attitude of the players and the victory. These cup games are difficult but we did well.

“What matters is our attitude and mentality throughout the game,” he explained.

One of the main talking points before kick-off was Flick’s decision to start Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

With Wojciech Szczesny also available, questions have been raised about the goalkeeper’s class, but Flick was quick to view the decision as one of caution rather than a statement.

Flick highlighted leadership, experience and pace when explaining why the Germany international was recognized, saying:

“Mark is the captain and has played a lot of games. We have talked to other coaches about giving him a chance to play.”

Flick also revisited the difficulty of the game itself, praising his team’s patience and discipline despite the lengthy wait for the opening goal.

Assessing the opponent and the nature of the match, Flick said:

“As I said before, these games are not easy. I am happy with the attitude of the players on the pitch.

“That was the key to our win. It’s not always easy to score in a game like this, but we did it.”

Before the game, Flick also addressed questions about Ter Stegen’s role and clarified that the goalkeeper’s addition should not be seen as a permanent change.

The head coach’s explanation was clear and pointed out his place in the XI “Today only” and added “He’s in good shape and can show he’s ready.”

Casado plays right back

Another surprise was the introduction of Marc Casado at right back.

Flick acknowledged the unconventional choice, reaffirming his confidence in the youngster’s midfield profile while explaining the practical reasons behind the move.

As the coach said, “Casado will play fullback.

“For me he’s more like a 6 or an 8, but I want to give Jules [Kounde] Get some rest and it’s important that he gets some playing time,” He explained.
