The National Wrestling Alliance announced the sad news in a statement on social media on Monday, December 8. “The National Wrestling Alliance is saddened by the passing of former NWA World Youth Heavyweight Champion ‘Mr. Power’ Steve Regal,” the statement read.

The statement concluded: “The flamboyant and charismatic fighter dominated professional wrestling’s junior heavyweight division in 1986 by defeating Danny Brown for the championship, paving the way for generations to come. The NWA sends its sincerest thoughts to Regal’s family, friends and fans during this time.”

The NWA announced the news while sharing a photo of Regal holding the World Youth Heavyweight Championship belt.

Regal died on July 30, according to his obituary. The cause of death was not disclosed.

An online obituary said it was with “deep sadness” that he bid farewell to Regal, “whose vibrant spirit touched the lives of many.”

“I remember Steve Regal wrestling in the NWA and AWA in the 80s. We will miss him. RIP,” one user wrote in response to NWA’s statement. Another described Regal as a “nice guy” and recalled sharing “some good exchanges” with the wrestler on social media.

Another wrote: “Him and Jimmy Garvin beating the Road Warriors is one of the craziest things in my earliest memories as a fan.”

Regal began his wrestling career in 1977, becoming a star in the United States Wrestling Association.

In 1986, he became the NWA World Youth Heavyweight Champion before retiring ten years later.
