The Atlanta Falcons still need to figure out the quarterback position.

They thought they solved that problem when they signed Kirk Cousins a few offseasons ago. Then they thought they had the problem solved when they drafted Michael Penix Jr. in the first round and gave him the starting job in Cousins’ place.
Now, they still have both, but it’s unclear how they will proceed.
Penix tore his ACL in November and may not be ready for Week 1.
Cousins is halfway through his four-year contract and was a trade candidate last offseason, but ultimately did not move.

ESPN’s Ben Solak provided his latest thoughts in a new article on Monday.
“The Falcons will keep Cousins through 2026. Of course, this is finally the year it will be easier for him to get out of his contract,” Solak wrote. “But Cousins’ offense is better than Penix’s, and Cousins looks healthier a year removed from an Achilles injury.”

In order to make a decision here, the Falcons first have to identify their leadership team. They fired head coach Raheem Morris and general manager Terry Fontenot on Sunday night. They are also apparently preparing to hire a president of football operations.

There were other decisions, highlighted by what to do with free agent tight end Kyle Pitts.
But quarterback is the most important position in sports, and the Falcons must come out of the offseason feeling like they’ve done the best they can at quarterback.
