Fabrizio Romano has confirmed Liverpool could make a surprise move in the final moments of the January transfer window.

Time is running out for the Reds to get the deal done. The January transfer window is set to close on Monday night with just a few days remaining.

Normally, Liverpool don’t leave things to the last minute. But sometimes it’s necessary.

This might just be one of them. Liverpool’s defense is depleted due to an injury to Jeremie Frimpong, who is expected to be sidelined for several weeks.

It is Frimpong’s third muscle injury since joining the club in the summer, with Joe Gomez, Connor Bradley and Giovanni Lenny all ruled out for the remainder of the season with injuries, which is compounded by the situation.

Currently, Liverpool are left to rely on Virgil van Dijk, Andy Robertson, Ibrahima Konate and Milos Kolker to stay afloat, with the likes of Wataru Endo and Dominik Szoboszlai filling in the gaps.

This is a volatile situation and one that the market must resolve. If Liverpool hope to succeed in both the Champions League and Premier League, they will need more depth than they currently have.

When Marc Guehi became available earlier in the transfer window, it was time for Richard Hughes to make his move. But his signature was beaten by Manchester City.

With only a few days left, finding the right target will be extremely difficult. Not many clubs are willing to sell their key players midway through the season and don’t have much time to replace them.

Liverpool have only themselves to blame and it appears the club will not take any action. However, Fabrizio Romano hinted at the opposite.

The football guru confirmed on his YouTube channel that Liverpool are exploring a surprise deal at the end of January.

“Liverpool have had some internal conversations today to examine the right-back market,” Romano said.

“They are exploring some possibilities, but they don’t think there are that many quality options. If they find a good solution, they will do it. Otherwise, they will stay with the current team.”

Therefore, based on these words, a delayed transfer is possible. While this is still unlikely given how late in the transfer window it is, the fact is that Liverpool are at least making a move and trying to bring someone in before the deadline.

Should they have had these conversations before? Maybe at the start of the transfer window? Absolutely.

But there’s nothing we or they can do about it now. The only thing we can hope for is that they do find a good solution.
