New Delhi: The Indian national cricket team and England cricket team will once again headline the big stage in the second semi-final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup at the iconic Wankhede Stadium. This is the third consecutive time the two powerhouses have met in the Final Four, having previously met in the semifinals in 2022 and 2024.
The showdown in Mumbai continued a gripping semi-final sequence. In 2022, England ended India’s campaign in the penultimate stage and defeated Pakistan in the final to lift the trophy. Two years later, the roles were reversed. Led by Rohit Sharma, India defeated England in the 2024 semi-finals and carried that momentum into the title race, defeating South Africa in Barbados to be crowned world champions.
Interestingly, in both editions, the winner of the India-England semi-final ended up lifting the trophy – a trend that adds extra intrigue to Thursday’s high-stakes clash.
In the Wankhede, England played six T20I matches, winning three and losing three. Meanwhile, India have played seven matches in the shortest format at this venue and have won in five of them. The Men in Blue have not lost on the field in a T20I match since December 2017. Their only defeats in Mumbai were against West Indies in 2016 and England in 2012. The two sides have met twice in the Wankhede in T20I matches, winning once each.
Overall, India and England have faced off five times in the history of the T20 World Cup. India are slightly ahead with three wins, while England have two wins, underscoring how evenly matched the two countries are on the global stage.
One of its most iconic moments dates back to its inaugural edition in 2007. During one of the group stage matches, Yuvraj Singh created a piece of cricketing folklore. After a fiery encounter with Andrew Flintoff, Yuvraj smashed Stuart Broad with six sixes in an over – a first-ever feat in T20 internationals. This extraordinary course of action remains one of the championship’s defining images and set the tone for a rivalry built on drama and high stakes.
Specific to the T20 World Cup semi-finals, this record is perfectly balanced. The two teams have met twice at this stage, each winning once, and in both cases, the victor went on to claim the world title.
