Estranged husband of slain Lexington officer Kaitlin Crook dies months after domestic shooting

Zachary Rogers, the estranged husband of off-duty Lexington police officer Caitlin Crook, has died, the North Carolina Bureau of Investigation said Saturday.

Crook was shot to death on the night of Dec. 17 in what authorities described as a “domestic incident,” in which Rogers and another man were injured, according to the SBI.

Police responded to reports of a shooting just after 9 p.m. on December 17. When police arrived, they found Crook and two men suffering from gunshot wounds. Crook was pronounced dead at the scene.

Rogers, a Lexington firefighter, was taken to a hospital in critical condition after the shooting and was later transferred to a rehabilitation facility. He was later readmitted to hospital.

The second injured man, Joshua Moore of Thomasville, is believed to be Crook’s current boyfriend. Moore was treated at the hospital and has since been released in stable condition.

Investigators recovered handguns from Rogers and Moore.

Authorities said neither Crook nor Rogers were on duty at the time of the shooting, that the three knew each other and that there was no indication there were other suspects.

The SBI is yet to finalize the case. Once the investigation is complete, agents will turn it over to the district attorney, who will decide whether to file charges, a process that can take weeks. No charges have been filed yet.
