Ty Simpson was elite in his only season as Alabama’s starting quarterback.
The star playmaker has been widely considered the top quarterback in the country for much of the season, as Simpson was in the Heisman conversation for much of the first half. Simpson has played a major role in the Tide’s success in the 2025 class, and the star quarterback is widely considered the top prospect in the NFL draft later this year.

ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky recently revealed his thoughts on Simpson’s performance throughout the first half of the season on First Take. In the meantime, Orlovsky said the Alabama quarterback was better than Heisman Trophy quarterback Fernando Mendoza eight weeks into the season in the first eight games he watched tape.
“I think through eight games, Ty Simpson’s tape of the first eight games of the season at Alabama, I think is more impressive than Fernando Mendoza’s tape,” Orlovsky said. “I just haven’t seen the second half of the season yet. I just haven’t finished it yet.”
Both Mendoza and Simpson are widely considered the two top quarterback prospects during April’s NFL draft. Simpson could start to flourish in his rookie season, as the former Alabama star could become a Day 1 starter next season, depending on the team that drafts him.
Simpson continues to climb up the quarterback prospect rankings as Orlovsky’s comments are sure to draw a lot of attention from the college football and NFL worlds.
