Enzo Maresca, who has won just one of his last seven Premier League games in charge, missed Tuesday night’s post-match press conference citing illness. Not surprisingly, this seems to be a fairly obvious attempt at a cover story. Somewhat surprisingly, the story being swept under the rug is apparently not that Chelsea are considering Maresca’s future, but that Maresca himself is considering his own future at the club – and may be willing to leave, losing millions in the process.
At least that’s the narrative from club Ben Jacobs claims that despite Chelsea having “no plans” to sack their manager after their most disastrous month yet, Maresca still feels unsupported and unappreciated and that he is “working hard under certain conditions” at the club.

Other reports, such as those from the BBC, the Telegraph or the Guardian, paint a very similar picture, and it seems that the rift between the manager and the hierarchy is already quite wide. The discord with the club’s leadership suggested by those “worst 48 hours” comments is not only real, but apparently quite obvious. The latter report calls it a complete and often irreversible collapse, no matter who was the final straw.
So as we say goodbye to 2025, we might not just say hello to 2026…
