Elon Musk said his artificial intelligence startup’s chatbot will be used on Tesla Inc vehicles, days after the bot posted anti-Semitic content on his social media platform.
“Grok will be in Tesla cars soon,” Musk posted on X on Thursday, “next week at the latest.”
Tesla’s CEO commented on the plan just hours after showing off a new version of Grok via live video. Musk and members of his xAI team touted improved voice dialogue and benchmarks showing the new AI system scoring higher than scores from OpenAI and other models.
xAI released Grok 4 about a day after it removed inappropriate posts from the chatbot on X, including anti-Semitic comments and replies to users. “Since becoming aware of the content, xAI has taken action to ban Grok from posting on X for hate speech,” the company said in a release.
The integration with Tesla Motors signals an expanded relationship between the electric car maker and xAI, something some Tesla investors have called for as its sales decline.
Last July, Musk asked X users whether Tesla should invest $5 billion in xAI, writing that he was participating in the poll “just to test the waters” and acknowledging that the automaker’s board and shareholders would need to approve such a deal.
After 68% of users who took part in the poll voted in favor, Musk wrote that he would discuss the idea with Tesla’s board of directors. xAI has since merged with X, with Musk saying the artificial intelligence startup was valued at $80 billion and the social network company at $33 billion.
Tesla disclosed in April that xAI was a source of revenue last year, with the startup incurring $198.3 million in fees from commercial, consulting and support agreements with the automaker. The bulk of that business ($191 million) involves xAI’s purchase of Tesla’s utility-scale energy storage battery, the Megapack.
Tesla shares were up 1.1% as of 7:21 a.m. Thursday before regular trading in New York.
