“The future is self-driving,” Merritt said, adding that this was the first time taxis were tested on Austin roads.

“This is supposed to be a purpose-built robotaxi built by Tesla, with no steering wheel or pedals,” O’Dowd said, before taking a sarcastic dig at the Cybercab because it has a steering wheel and pedals and is “manually driven by a human!”

It’s worth noting that the Cybercab shown in O’Dowd’s video has California license plates and first appeared after the video was posted on X late last month. It’s not the same unit as the Cybercab discovered in Austin, but it’s currently impossible to verify whether the Austin unit was also driven by a human driver.

The news comes as the automaker faces a 30-day suspension of its license to build and sell vehicles in California following a court ruling that the electric car giant’s use of marketing terms such as “self-driving” and “fully self-driving (FSD)” was deceptive. The decision comes after the California DMV filed a lawsuit against the state.
According to this decision, investors Gene Munster of Deepwater Asset Management Called the ruling “ridiculous” and said the company sent a clear message urging drivers to be careful when FSD is on. Munster had earlier predicted that Tesla would expand its driverless robotaxi operations in multiple cities next year.
The technology has also been praised by South Korean lawmakers Li Suyinghe praised the FSD system as a “complete technology” that has the potential to change people’s daily lives. She also said she would encourage other leaders in the country to experience the technology.
