Elderly Man Leaves Note for Help Near Mailbox After Caregiver Attacked Him, Stole His Belongings

A paramedic in Lantana, Florida, was arrested after leaving a note asking for help near the mailbox of an elderly man where he worked. Denise Williams lived with the 81-year-old and he hired her to care for him. The arrest report said Williams, 60, became upset with the condition of the bathroom before he and the victim began arguing on Sunday, Dec. 28, CBS 12 reported. The fight allegedly escalated when Williams allegedly jumped on top of the victim while he was lying on the bed. She then grabbed him around the neck with both hands and tried to strangle him. “She jumped on me, got on top of me and started grabbing my hand that was holding the phone and I wanted to call the police but I couldn’t because she grabbed the phone,” the victim, who requested anonymity, recalled to the outlet of the incident. Daughter told Florida police she killed her elderly mother so she could die “with dignity.” When the victim was asked if he thought “she was trying to kill” him, he responded, “No, no. She was just angry.” Williams then took the victim’s car keys and cellphone and disconnected two landlines at his home, Lantana police said. After she allegedly locked him in a bedroom, she stole his credit cards and checkbook and left the home. The victim was unable to contact police without a cellphone, so he wrote a note that said “Call the police” and hung it on the mailbox next to the front door. A day later, on Monday, December 29, a postman discovered the note and discussed what to do with his supervisor. He eventually decided to call Lantana police to report the news. Williams was subsequently arrested and charged with robbery, battery on an elderly person, exploitation of an elderly person and victim abuse, according to online records reviewed by Us Weekly. She was first taken to a hospital for evaluation and is currently being held at the Palm Beach County Jail. Williams is being held on $110,000 bail on all charges. It was unclear whether Williams had obtained legal representation or entered a plea. The Lantana Police Department did not immediately respond to Us Weekly’s request for more information. A woman was shot after using a stolen Panera order to gain entry to a home owned by two ex-husbands. Williams did not write and cash any of the checks she stole, and she did not appear to use his credit card, the victim testified. The man, a Navy veteran, widower and retired security guard, explained that Williams had been his live-in caregiver for more than two years and that he paid her $2,000 a month. The victim told the outlet he was “very, very happy” the postman reported his note after finding it. Additionally, he shared his thoughts on the entire situation. “I am [feeling] “I’m really sorry because she has nowhere to go right now except where she’s going to be when she’s discharged from the hospital,” the victim said.
