Duke Energy urges Carolina customers to cut energy use Monday morning. How you can help:

CHARLOTTE (Queen City News) – As temperatures continue to drop below freezing, Duke Energy officials are asking customers to help reduce energy use as demand increases across the Carolinas.

The Carolinas are in for another freezing night, with lows dropping back into the single digits and teens for many. High temperatures will rise above freezing on Monday, but high temperatures will still be limited to the mid-30s.

Therefore, between 4 a.m. and 10 a.m. Monday, February 2, officials are asking all Carolina customers to voluntarily reduce their energy use to reduce energy demands on the grid and reduce the potential for temporary outages.

Cities such as Gastonia also urged residents to use less electricity Monday morning.

“When temperatures drop this low, energy consumption can quickly climb,” said Gastonia Public Services Director Dusty Wentz. “Even small changes in the morning can help keep the power flowing and ensure there is enough available power throughout the community.”

Tips for customers

  • Lower thermostat temperature Set to lowest comfort setting

  • Avoid using large appliances Washer, dryer and dishwasher included between 4 a.m. and 10 a.m.

  • Turn off any unnecessary devicessuch as plugins and lights.

  • For electric vehicle owners: Charge at noon when demand is low.
