Driver taken to Watertown hospital after two-car incident

A man was taken to the hospital after a two-vehicle crash in Watertown Friday night.

According to a news release from WPD and WFR, on January 23 at approximately 5:10 p.m., the Watertown Police Department and Watertown Fire Rescue responded to a multi-vehicle crash in the 2100 block of Southwest Ninth Avenue/Hwy 212, near the intersection of 21st Street West and U.S. Highway 212, near Evolution Powersports.

A white 2017 Chevrolet K3500 pickup truck towing a flatbed trailer loaded with drywall was traveling west on Southwest Ninth Avenue/Highway 212. At the same time, a black 2011 Ford F-150 four-door pickup truck was traveling eastbound on Southwest Ninth Avenue. On Southwest 21st Street, a light-colored SUV was traveling south on Southwest Ninth Avenue and reportedly struck the path of a white Chevrolet pickup truck, according to WPD.

The driver of the white Chevrolet pickup allegedly swerved left to avoid a collision with the light-colored SUV and crossed into the eastbound lanes of Southwest Ninth Avenue in front of the black pickup. According to WPD, the front of the black pickup truck reportedly collided with a trailer being pulled by a white Chevrolet, with both vehicles coming to rest in the ditch on the south side of Southwest Ninth Avenue.

The driver of the pickup truck was from Watertown. A 23-year-old male was driving a white pickup truck and a 50-year-old male was driving a black pickup truck. An ambulance transported the driver of the black pickup truck to Prairie Lakes Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, WPD reported.

The age or city of the SUV driver or passengers in the SUV was not reported.

The white heavy-duty pickup truck was pulling a flatbed trailer loaded with about 40 panels of drywall. There was a passenger in the truck, according to WFR. Neither passenger reported injuries, WFR reported.

The black pickup truck was severely damaged and was inoperable and was towed from the scene. The white Chevrolet sustained minor damage and is still drivable. The trailer towed by the Chevrolet sustained significant damage, the release said.

Engine No. 4 remained on scene to assist with debris removal and Crocker’s Towing responded to remove the vehicle. Crews were at the scene for about 20 minutes, WFR reported.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing. The Watertown Police Department was assisted by Watertown Fire Rescue.
