Dozens of flights canceled at Sarasota airport SRQ. Here’s why

Dozens of flights in and out of Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport (SRQ) in Sarasota were canceled and nearly a dozen were delayed on Monday, February 23, as a powerful nor’easter brought heavy snow to parts of the northeastern United States, according to flight tracking website FlightAware.

More than 5,000 flights were canceled across Florida and nationwide on Monday.

Most flight cancellations affected major airports in and around New York, Boston and Philadelphia as strong nor’easters dropped up to 20 inches of snow in some areas.

Airlines warn that even after the winter storm ends, more flight cancellations may continue for a day or two as crews work to reposition planes and resume normal flight operations.

How do I check if my flight is cancelled?

Don’t wait until you get to the airport to check your flight. From now on, monitor your flights early and often, as flight cancellations will increase as weather conditions worsen.

Download the airline’s mobile app and turn on push and text notifications to get alerts about your flights. Some apps have a “Where is my plane?” feature that allows you to see if the plane scheduled to operate your flight has arrived, been delayed en route, or has not yet departed from the previous airport. This can be an early sign of trouble.

What should you do if your flight is delayed or canceled? Latest information on rebooking, refunds

Going founder Scott Keyes says if your flight is canceled, use the airline’s mobile app to rebook as soon as possible. If you need to talk to someone, Case recommends calling one of the airline’s international lines.

“The best thing travelers can do is be as proactive as possible and switch to a new flight,” Case told USA TODAY. “When a flight is canceled, suddenly hundreds of passengers need new itineraries. There may only be a few seats left on the best flights, and it’s a first-come, first-served effort.”

If your flight is canceled for any reason and you choose not to travel on the alternative itinerary offered by the airline, you are entitled to a full refund. The same goes for “significant” delays or changes.
