Doug Armstrong will not return as Canada men’s hockey GM

Doug Armstrong will not seek to return as general manager of the Canadian men’s hockey team, a decision he has reportedly made regardless of the outcome of the Olympics (an overtime loss to the United States in the gold medal game).

Armstrong, whose contract ends after the Olympics, has since told Hockey Canada that he will focus on the St. Louis Blues’ front office, although he will relinquish general manager duties to Alexander Steen after this season.

“We thank Doug Armstrong for his dedication, leadership and success to Hockey Canada’s men’s program over the years,” Hockey Canada senior vice-president of high performance and hockey operations Scott Salmond said in a statement.

As general manager of the national team, Armstrong was responsible for national team selection for the Milan Cortina Games, the 2016 Hockey World Cup, the 2025 Four Nations Tournament and the 2023, 2024 and 2025 World Championships.

Armstrong, 61, said he is “no longer in the role” of Canada’s general manager. According to NHL.com.

“It’s time for a change,” Armstrong said. According to “Sports News”. “I loved every aspect of it. Obviously, you hope you stand out. But it would be selfish to want to do it again. It was a great experience and I think more people should enjoy it.”

Armstrong was also supposed to serve as general manager of the 2022 Olympic team before the NHL withdrew from the competition due to the COVID-19 pandemic disrupting the season.

Armstrong’s transition isn’t surprising, as hockey staffs often rotate through each Olympic cycle.
