Colorado State QB Dominiq Ponder died in a car crash early Sunday, March 1, according to police.

The quarterback has spent the past two seasons with Colorado after starting his career at Bethune-Cookman. Ponder played two games in 2025, attempting one pass and running two. Tributes from coaches and teammates showed the huge impact he had on the team and locker room.

In the early morning hours of Sunday, March 1, Pound was involved in a single-car accident. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Pound was driving a 2023 Tesla Model 3. Police said the quarterback lost control of the car while making a turn, and the car crossed the eastbound lane and hit a guardrail. The car then hit a utility pole before rolling down an embankment and bursting into flames.

The crash happened around 3 a.m. in Boulder County. While police will conduct a thorough investigation, preliminary investigations “suspect speed as a factor in the crash.”
