Dolphins announce they will release Tua Tagovailoa

Tua Tagovailoa’s time with the Dolphins is over.

The Dolphins announced Monday morning that they have informed Tagovailoa that they will release him when the new season begins on Wednesday. By waiting until then to make a move, the Dolphins could designate the quarterback for release after June 1 and spread his remaining cap hits over the next two seasons.

The impact on the remaining salary cap will be huge, as it will leave $99 million in dead money on the Dolphins’ salary cap. They will also be responsible for Tagovailoa’s fully guaranteed salary of $54 million through the 2026 season.

“As we move forward, we will focus on injecting competition throughout our roster and building a solid foundation for this team to work toward building a consistent winner,” general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan said.

The first step in that process will be the search for a new quarterback to run the offense while Tagovailoa tries to find a place to revive a career that has languished over the past few seasons in Miami.
