Despite the injury, Carroll has stayed out and is expected to be a candidate for National League MVP this season.

Los Angeles Dodgers two-way star Shohei Ohtani was named the favorite (28 first-place votes) in a recent poll of more than 40 MLB.com experts, with Carroll finishing fourth for the award. MLB.com’s Jason Foster noted that Carroll’s “potent combination of fierceness and speed” makes him a strong candidate.

“Carroll finished fifth in MVP voting after being named the 2023 NFC Rookie of the Year, and finished sixth last season,” Foster wrote. “He returns to the lineup this season as he continues to be a significant offensive threat at defensive back. Like De La Cruz, Carroll brings a potent combination of fierceness and speed that make him a game-changer. He leads the majors in triples (four), which is no surprise as he has led the NL or all of baseball in that category every season since his rookie year.”

In 31 games, the two-time All-Star batted .273 with an OPS of .890, four homers, and four triples (leading the MLB). Carroll has the potential to be a 20 triple/20 home run/20 stolen base player, something that hasn’t happened since Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins and Detroit Tigers outfielder Curtis Granderson accomplished the feat in 2007.
