Democrat lawmaker calls Clarence Thomas an ‘Uncle Tom’ and ‘lynchman’ after Supreme Court redistricting ruling

State Rep. Juandalen Givan launched a blistering attack on U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Clarence Thomas in a fiery video Monday, calling him an “Uncle Tom” and a “lynch” and accusing him of betraying the black community.

Her comments came in response to Monday’s Supreme Court ruling on redistricting, in which justices overturned a court-ordered 2023 congressional map that had helped add a Democratic-leaning seat to the 2024 election.

The decision could clear the way for a contested map that would eliminate two Democratic-controlled congressional seats, potentially affecting Rep. Terry Sewell and Somalia’s numbers.

In a scathing rebuke, Guivan argued that Thomas undermined minority representation in Congress and further likened him to a slave trader and a sellout within his own community.

“He must have been the one who betrayed us in Africa. He must have been. His ancestors must have been the one who betrayed us in Africa that led to us being locked up,” Jivan said on Facebook. “He was the one who got us back into the hands of our masters.”

“I don’t know what kind of black man he was. I don’t know what plantation this man came from. I don’t know what slave ship he was on. I don’t know what part of the slave ship he was on,” she added.

“You’re on the Republican side. You’re a f**king straw boss … or Uncle Tom to these people. I just don’t get it,” she said.

Alabama’s congressional map depends on our Supreme Court

Thomas, who oversees cases in the Alabama district, has consistently opposed the “racial apportionment” of congressional seats, arguing that the practice is discriminatory and unconstitutional.

His decision Monday effectively overturns a court map drawn by an 11th Circuit judge, which could further allow black voters to choose their preferred candidate in the upcoming May 19 primary.

On December 17, 2024, the Supreme Court appeared on Capitol Hill in Washington.

Jivan noted that the new ruling could invalidate two seats, potentially forcing a new vote based on newly allowed maps.
