“I wouldn’t say anything like that,” Jones told reporters Sunday when asked if he would bring Eberforce back next season.

As it turns out, Jones couldn’t say that for good reason. Eberfluth is not coming back.

The Cowboys released Eberflus on Tuesday morning, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

He’s only been Dallas’ defensive coordinator for one season.

The Cowboys rank 30th among 32 NFL teams in total defense and last in scoring defense. Their pass defense is the main culprit, ranking 32nd through 32 games and allowing more passing yards than any other team in the league.

Dallas may not have been helped in that regard by trading Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers in the late summer. A superstar pass rusher like Parsons makes life easier in the secondary because opposing quarterbacks have to make snap decisions instead of just grabbing the football and waiting for players to get open.

Instead, the Cowboys ended up with a plethora of defensive tackles (Kenny Clark from the Parsons trade, Quinnen Williams later from the Jets) and not much defensive talent elsewhere.

Dallas will choose to let others try to shape this mess next season.

Eberflus served as the head coach of the Chicago Bears from 2022 until he was fired during the 2024 season.

The 55-year-old also coached in college for more than a decade and previously held various NFL positions with the Browns, Cowboys and Colts.
