Confederate flag flown at Murrells Inlet fast food restaurant. How’d it get there?

A Murrells Inlet fast food restaurant received negative attention after someone hung a Confederate flag on a pole outside the restaurant.

The flag flew on a pole outside the Wendy’s store at 1305 Tadlock Drive for about three hours Sunday before the general manager was notified by a customer. General Manager Mikey Ashworth said when he arrived at work around 6 a.m., the flags were not yet up on the poles.

Ashworth said he usually walks around the building to make sure everything is OK. He said the flag has not been flown on the pole since he started working about three months ago.

“As soon as I found out… I immediately took it off and threw it in the trash,” Ashworth said.

Ashworth said he wasn’t sure who put up the flag. He said it was easy to reach the hook on the pole.

Ashworth said he was disturbed that the flag was hung on a pole and was not made by employees.

The flag is considered a racist symbol, symbolizing the Confederacy’s fight to maintain slavery in the United States during the Civil War.
