Classic Car Worth Over $150K Found Being Held Together By Tape

A 1973 Holden Torana XUI stolen in October has been recovered and its parts taped back together.

The 1973 Holden Torana XUI is not a cheap car in the collector car market. Although rarely sold to the public, pieces offered at auction can without a doubt reach well over $100,000, and even more in good condition. So once someone goes missing, the loss is considerable. Parts of the car were said to have been taped together when it was found.

In the early morning of October last year, a 1973 Holden Torana XUI was stolen from a shed in Napier, New Zealand’s North Island. Shawn Hardin (pictured above) was arrested for stealing a car and had several stories about why he owned the car, saying he didn’t steal it himself. Sean claimed he bought the car for $20,000 and traded it in for a Harley-Davidson motorcycle. He was subsequently charged and pleaded guilty to receiving stolen property.

Video shows two car thieves kicking in the door to enter the shed. They also tried taking a $170,000 boat but didn’t know how to tow it. After a failed attempt at a boat ride, they returned and stole a one-of-a-kind Holden muscle car.

“There are indications that this vehicle has been specifically targeted. To dismantle it would require breaking in and moving the two vehicles blocking its path so that the vehicle could be removed,” the report said.

The car sustained extensive damage, including damage to the steering column and interior trim. In addition, the gearbox was severely damaged.

Unsurprisingly, the man arrested behind the wheel also had a methamphetamine pipe in his pocket and had a criminal record, including a charge of stabbing his ex-partner in front of their children in 2005.
