The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning earlier this week for nearly all of eastern Pennsylvania and all of New Jersey north of Camden County.

FOX 29 Meteorologist Sue Serio said the storm could bring snow, sleet and freezing rain depending on the location.

“What you’re going to get (snow, sleet, freezing rain) depends on where you are,” Therio said.

The storm will begin moving from west to east on Friday afternoon. In Philadelphia, sleet, freezing rain and light snow are expected. Rain will shift to South Jersey and Delaware Friday night.

When does the snow start?

Precipitation will begin in the Philadelphia area around 5 or 6 PM on Friday, moving from west to east again. Models then predict the storm will move offshore sometime between 10 a.m. and noon Saturday.

How much snow will we see?

According to European models, potential snowfall totals may have been reached by Saturday morning, December 27.

From a numerical perspective

Models for potential snowfall totals vary. But overall, forecasters are predicting 1 to 2 inches of snowfall in northern Delaware and 1.5 to 4 inches in the Philadelphia area, with higher totals the further north you go.

There’s a nearly 30% chance of 4 inches or more of snow/sleet in Philadelphia by Saturday morning, and as high as 63% 30 miles north of Trenton, according to the National Weather Service.

As of Saturday, December 27, the total potential ice accumulation has been reached.

Why you should care

In addition to the snow, experts are predicting heavy ice accumulation overnight Friday into Saturday, making streets and sidewalks very slippery.

The National Weather Service said people “should consider postponing all travel” until after the winter storm is over.

“If travel is absolutely necessary, please drive with extreme caution,” the National Weather Service said, advising travelers to carry a safety bag and other supplies in case they become stranded.
