SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — TGL is a technology-filled virtual golf league keeping golf fans entertained on Monday and Tuesday nights. Its big screen and crazy holes may also appeal to younger golfers.

According to statistics, two young players credit the technology-infused virtual golf league TGL with preparing them for PGA Tour competition.

Justin Thomas Atlanta Drive member Chris Gotterup and Rory McIlroy Boston Common reserve Michael Thorbjornsen both had strong performances at the 2026 WM Phoenix Open. Gottrup opened his week with a 63 at TPC Scottsdale and ended it with a playoff win over Hideki Matsuyama for his fourth PGA Tour title.

Thorbjornsson, who is seeking his first PGA Tour event, shot 66, 71 and 65 over the first three days before climbing into the personal lead with three holes to play on Sunday and finishing tied for third.

WMPO is known for its big crowds and high excitement. Maybe TGL did help this pair perform well all week.

“I feel like TGL really helps me focus when the crowd is loud and people are staring at you,” Thorbjornsen said Saturday. “I wish I could do as much as I did in TGL I feel like it definitely helps give me some confidence on the greens that I can putt on artificial turf or grass. Again, when you hit a bad shot, people are going to look at you and boo you, you just have to deal with it now.”

Gottrup played in his most recent game before WM last Monday.

“We flew back from TGL and I was like, ‘I need to be here this week for Saturday,'” meaning he really wanted to advance in Scottsdale. “I think starting this year, I really feel like I’ve been working hard in the offseason to get ready for the season. Same thing with TGL in the offseason, just getting used to the adrenaline rush and being able to hit the ball under pressure has helped me and my game.”
