I’ve been studying the mini PC market for several years and am a big supporter of the concept. My parents both worked on computers purchased in 2012 and I upgraded them to a couple of mini computers in 2023. I also built a home media network using a cheap mini computer that had been running for years.
I’ve also recommended the mini-PC route to friends asking how to upgrade aging computers, especially during COVID-19 pricing and the ongoing cost instability of PC components. This is largely because companies need hardware to handle the massive workloads that will come with the rise of artificial intelligence. While I think a mini PC is a great option, especially for those who primarily use their computer for basic tasks and media consumption, it’s not for everyone.
There are companies with names you’ve never heard of that market cheap mini PCs with outdated specs, lower build quality, and lackluster support. This makes many mini computers not a good choice for serious work or entertainment. That’s where small computers like the Mac mini come in. This is as close to a true desktop replacement as we’ve ever had, with enough power inside to keep you running smoothly for years.

Mac mini has long-term value

One of the Mac mini’s strengths is the Apple name, which has been supporting its device for years. The company also offers industry-leading support services, which are even better if you subscribe to Apple One or AppleCare. Most mini PCs also have inherent limitations, even the GEEKOM A8 mini PC we introduced earlier. The problem comes from a lack of long-term power and performance, especially on cheaper systems. The lack of advanced processing power hinders many modern AI applications, and gaming performance is generally poor due to the lack of dedicated GPUs.
The Mac mini avoids this due to its inclusion of the M4 chip. The chip features the fastest CPU cores available today, which means the Mac mini will still feel powerful years from now. A dedicated neural processing unit (NPU) is optimized for AI and machine learning tasks such as Apple Intelligence, and a 10-core GPU powers modern features like ray tracing. This gives you great power for all your AI tasks and gives you a ton of gaming options, especially if you rely on Apple Arcade games.

Starting at just $599, the Mac mini offers a lot of power and functionality at a very competitive price, especially compared to many of the mini PCs on the market today. Apple even says its Mac mini is roughly 6 times more powerful than comparable larger PCs (via Croma ).
With the ability to drive three monitors, Apple Intelligence to support your work and education goals, and powerful editing tools for creators, it’s hard to find another PC this size that can match the Mac mini. If you’re already part of the Apple ecosystem, being able to have your iPhone and Mac mini work together might improve your productivity in ways you’ve never thought of before. You can seamlessly mirror your iPhone on the screen, take calls and text messages from your Mac mini, and even turn your iPhone into the best webcam on the market. If you’re looking to upgrade an older computer and want the convenience and style of a smaller computer, the Mac mini is definitely worth your attention.
