Chargers roster earns top 10 ranking in early free agency assessment

In Bleacher Report’s Moe Moton’s early evaluation of NFL free agency, the Chargers’ roster ranked in the top 10.

The Bolts ranked ninth among the best teams in early free agency, just ahead of the 49ers.

“Quarterback Justin Herbert has to overcome postseason humiliation; he has yet to lead the Chargers to a victory in three postseason games. However, the 28-year-old is a two-time Pro Bowler who has led the team to the playoffs in back-to-back seasons.

“When healthy, the Chargers have one of the best offensive lines in the league, but we didn’t see the starting lineup come together last season. Rashawn Slater is out for the 2025 season with a ruptured patellar tendon. Joe Alt missed 11 games with an injury.

“With both Pro Bowlers back on the field, Los Angeles should run a more effective passing attack and physical ground game, which means the production of wide receiver Ladd McConkey and running back Omarion Hampton could improve,” Morton wrote.

Additionally, the Chargers re-signed Khalil Mack to an $18 million deal, along with some other big names on defense, keeping Los Angeles solid on the other side of the ball.

“Star pass rusher Khalil Mack signed a one-year deal. He will continue to be paired with edge Pro Bowler Tuli Tuipulotu. Derwin James Jr. is an eight-year veteran and remains a Pro Bowl-caliber safety. Sell-out cornerback Donte Jackson Jackson has not had the honor on his resume despite recording nine interceptions over the past two years,” Morton added.

Although the Chargers lost defensive coordinator Jesse Minter, Morton believes the team should perform well under Chris O’Leary.

All in all, the Chargers have been impressive in free agency so far. What happens next? Hope to become a high-end defender.
