Bungie, the maker of Destiny, announced last week that it would lay off 220 employees and make structural changes as part of cost-cutting measures. The studio cited rising development costs and a tough economic environment as factors behind its decision. Now, Bungie is trying to reassure players about their commitment to Destiny, saying it will share future plans for the series soon.
“The Future of Destiny”
In a post on X via the Destiny 2 team account on Friday, Bungie reiterated its commitment to its popular online shooter Destiny and said it will continue to release regular updates about the game to its player base.
“We know that recent changes at Bungie have created uncertainty about the future of Destiny,” the post reads. “Rest assured, we remain committed to Destiny, supporting our community in a transparent manner and providing regular updates about the game.”

The developer confirmed that Destiny is not over yet and will soon reveal plans for the “future of Destiny” and the next “multi-year journey” for the series. “We will let everyone know once we plant the flag for this date,” the studio added.
Bungie layoffs
Bungie’s latest news comes just days after the studio made a major organizational change, cutting 220 positions at the company, or about 17% of its workforce. In a July 31 blog post on Bungie’s website, studio CEO Pete Parsons claimed that the company needed to make “substantial changes” to its cost structure and “focus development efforts solely on Destiny and Marathon.” The layoffs affected all levels of the company, including most executive and senior leadership positions.
Additionally, Parsons announced major changes to the studio to deepen its integration with Sony, including the PlayStation parent company absorbing Bungie’s 155 characters into Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) in the coming quarters. Bungie and Sony will also form a new studio within PlayStation Studios to work on an as-yet-unannounced action game set in a new science-fantasy universe.
