The Milwaukee Bucks have said goodbye to Cam Thomas.
On Monday night, the Bucks officially waived Thomas after he played only 18 games for the team. Instead, the team opted to convert Pete Nance’s two-way contract to a standard contract.

In total, Thomas spent about six weeks with the Bucks. He was waived by the Brooklyn Nets a few days ago and the team signed him on February 8th. The Nets selected him with the 27th overall pick in 2021 out of LSU, but his role has gradually decreased this season. He only started 8 games for the team in the first half of the year, averaging more than 24 minutes per game, averaging 15.6 points and 3.1 assists per game.
While this split may seem minor, considering Thomas has only been on the court for two months and has struggled all season, it marks a quick turnaround for a team that valued him so highly upon his arrival.

When Bucks general manager Jon Horst signed Thomas last month, it sounded like he wanted Thomas to be a key part of the team’s future, with head coach Rovers even speaking very highly of him and comparing him to Jamal Crawford and Lou Williams after just two games.
“They’re similar, but different,” Rivers said on February 11, via The Athletic . “Cam wants to do the right thing. He wants to play well. You can see that. We’re going to give him every opportunity. I mean, the guy is a natural scorer, you can see that. He probably forced a time or two today where he overdribbled the ball. You’ve got to live with that, you’ve got to teach him that. But overall, he’s great.”
Thomas’ split is just the latest high-profile issue in the Bucks’ front office as of late. The organization reportedly does not want star Giannis Antetokounmpo to continue playing this season due to various injuries. However, Antetokounmpo wants to move on and is at odds with them. The feud between the two comes after months of rumors suggesting the team would trade their star player, but nothing was agreed upon before the deadline.

Antetokounmpo has not officially requested a trade, but he has said he wants to play for a consistent winner — something the Bucks are unable to do. The team entered Monday night’s game against the Los Angeles Clippers with a 29-41 record and 11th place in the Eastern Conference standings. They’ve also lost 10 of their last 13 games and are on track to miss the playoffs for the first time in a decade.
What will happen in Milwaukee this summer is still anyone’s guess. But Thomas will get another fresh start for the second time in as many weeks.
