Brazil’s Pinheiro Braathen leads GS after 1st run, seeking South America’s 1st medal at Winter Games

BORMIO, Italy (AP) — Brazilian skier Lucas Pinheiro Braathen took the lead in the Olympic giant slalom on Saturday after the first of two races and looked set to win South America’s first medal at the Winter Olympics.

In a field of 81 competitors, there are many lower-level competitors who have yet to complete their first round, many of whom represent non-traditional skiing nations. The final round will be held later on Saturday. The top 30 will be ranked in reverse chronological order, which means Pinheiro Braathen is ranked 30th.

The first skier on the Stelvio circuit, Pinheiro Braathen took advantage of the slippery surface to finish in 1 minute 13.92 seconds. His fast run put him 0.95 seconds ahead of defending Olympic champion Marco Odermatt of Switzerland.
