Coming face to face with a giant snake is enough to make most people freeze. However, in this short video circulating online, two boys do the opposite – they intervene when they see a large python wrapped around a dog.

The clip, shared on YouTube by the Brave Paws channel, shows a reticulated python (reticulated python) was reining in a dog while the boys tried to separate the two animals with long sticks. Reticulated pythons are non-venomous pythons that are one of the largest snake species in the world and are native to parts of South and Southeast Asia.

How pythons hunt

Pythons kill their prey by constriction, a process in which the snake coils its body around the animal and tightens its grip as the prey exhales. This prevents the lungs from refilling with air and may lead to suffocation or circulatory collapse. Contractions are an automatic body response to movement, not a sign of aggression or intent.

Nonvenomous pythons may attack defensively when threatened or harassed, although they do not have venom. This behavior is to deter a perceived threat rather than capture prey.

In the video, the boys use sticks to keep their distance while trying to control the snake’s head and body. At one point, a boy pinned the python’s head to the ground and told them to pull the coil away from the dog. Once released, the dog will run away.

Without a veterinary evaluation, it is impossible to determine the dog’s condition following the incident or whether the attack would have been fatal if it had continued unabated.

Do pythons eat pets?

Pythons are opportunistic predators whose diets vary by species, size and habitat. In their native range, they feed on animals such as rodents, birds, reptiles, monkeys, pigs, wallabies and antelopes.

While dogs and cats are not typical prey animals, there have been documented cases of large pythons attacking smaller pets, particularly in areas where large python species live close to human settlements. Such incidents are uncommon and usually involve very large snakes and small animals.

Pythons rely more on scent and heat detection than sight when hunting, using specialized sensory organs to locate warm-blooded prey.

Stay safe around large snakes

Wildlife experts recommend that pets be supervised or kept indoors in areas where large predators are present. If you encounter a large snake, authorities recommend keeping your distance and contacting local wildlife professionals rather than attempting to intervene.

Encounters like the one shown in the video are rare, but they highlight how interactions with wildlife can quickly become dangerous — for both animals and humans.

The 11 species of pythons are: Indian python, Central African rock python, ball python, Burmese python, southern African rock python, Sumatran short-tailed python, Borneo python, Angora python, Burungus horse short-tailed python, Burmese short-tailed python and European python. As we can imagine, they come in various sizes and can be found all over the world.

Their appetites vary depending on where they live. However, they also eat prey such as rodents, birds, lizards, monkeys, wallabies, pigs, and even antelopes. While pets like dogs and cats are not on this list, that doesn’t mean they are exempt. A hungry python will eat just about anything it can get its hands on.
