Boy, 12, arrested over damage after refugee debate

A 12-year-old boy has been arrested after being forced to close parliamentary offices for vandalism.

Kent Police said the boy, from Sittingbourne, was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage on Tuesday and was later released on bail.

He was arrested after a report of criminal damage was made to police on December 10 after people in the public gallery disrupted a debate at Swale District Council about making the area a refugee “sanctuary area”.

The council later said its offices in Sittingbourne Street East were unable to open the next day because toilets and lifts were damaged and “deliberate flooding resulted in water pouring from the ceiling in a number of areas”.

Kent Police said: “Inquiries into other suspected criminal conduct are ongoing.”

Police are urging witnesses or anyone with information to contact them or the charity Crimestoppers.

House of Commons Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle previously condemned the incident as an unacceptable “attack on democracy” after Sittingbourne and Sheppey MP Kevin McKenna raised it in parliament.
