Borussia Dortmund aiming to make it a title race with Bayern Munich in Bundesliga

Despite a disappointing 2-1 loss to Augsburg on Saturday, Bayern Munich remains eight points ahead of second-placed Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga.

While the lead isn’t insurmountable, barring an epic German slide, the black and yellow will have a hard time catching the Bavarians record master.

Even so, Dortmund will not give up.

“I don’t want the title to be decided in March. I want to stay in contention as long as possible. If we reduce the gap to four or five points at some point, they will start to have second thoughts. They will still come to us. They are not completely out of sight and we want to be there when they make mistakes,” Dortmund center back Nico Schloterback told Bild (photo by @iMiaSanMia).

Emre Can echoed his teammate’s sentiments.

“Eight points is a lot, Bayern are having a great season, but so are we. We focus on ourselves and we’ll see what happens in the end,” Can pointed out.

In the end, Borussia Dortmund general manager Lars Riken believes Bayern Munich’s loss to Augsburg did represent one thing – hope.

“The fact that they lost is a good sign for the Bundesliga. It shows that they are beatable. If we had not lost them in stoppage time, we could have picked up a few more points. Now we need to focus on ourselves,” Riken said.

Bayern Munich’s performance this week may give hope to their rivals, but the Bavarians have been resilient and won’t suffer a prolonged slump. For their sake, let’s hope this remains true.
