On Saturday, Minnesota Attorney General Pam Bondi outlined provisions to “restore the rule of law,” just hours after federal immigration officers shot and killed a second person in Minneapolis.
“You and your office must restore the rule of law, support ICE officers, and end chaos in Minnesota,” Bondi wrote in a letter to Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D) that has been obtained by multiple media outlets. “Fortunately, there are some common-sense solutions to these problems, and I hope we can do them together.”
In the letter, Bondi urged Walz to turn over information about the state’s welfare programs at a time of increasing scrutiny over a massive fraud scandal, and she asked him to repeal immigrant sanctuary policies and let the Justice Department look at voter rolls “to confirm that Minnesota’s voter registration practices comply with federal law.”
“I believe these simple steps will help restore law and order to Minnesota and improve American lives,” Bundy said in the letter.
The Hill has reached out to the Justice Department and Walz’s office for comment.
A man was shot and killed during an incident involving federal law enforcement in Minneapolis on Saturday. The Hill’s sister network NewsNation reported that 37-year-old Alex Jeffrey Pretti was shot multiple times before being taken to the hospital, according to Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara.
Minnesota has been at the center of tensions over President Trump’s immigration agenda for weeks since Renee Good was fatally shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer in early January.
Trump on Saturday linked Preity’s killing on Saturday to Minnesota’s welfare fraud scandal, claiming there was a coordinated “cover-up” to distract from the tens of billions of dollars stolen from the state.
“We are in this situation because of massive currency fraud, billions of dollars going missing, and illegal criminals infiltrating the state through Democrats’ open border policies,” Trump wrote.
“Much of what you see is a cover-up of theft and fraud. The mayor and governor are fomenting insurrection with their grandiose, dangerous and arrogant rhetoric! Instead, these sanctimonious political fools should be looking for the billions of dollars stolen from the people of Minnesota and the United States of America,” he continued.
Meanwhile, Walz asked federal officials to leave his state after Saturday’s fatal shooting.
“Donald Trump, I’m calling on you again: Remove this force from Minnesota,” Walz said at a news conference Saturday. “They are sowing chaos and violence. Time and time again we see deadly violence by federal agents.”
