Liverpool could sign a better talent than Antoine Semenho for £62m. Now it’s Richard Hughes’ turn to make that happen.
Liverpool go into the January transfer window knowing they have to keep an eye on wingers. After selling Luis Diaz in the summer but deciding not to replace him, there’s no way around it.

Of course, it would be one thing if the system changed and Liverpool thrived without wingers. However, none of these things are true.
Arne Slaughter did not strictly follow last season’s 4-2-3-1 formation and made the change last month. But he’s actually reverted to a variation of that system – and he’s still working very hard to get wingers into it.
However, the poor performance highlighted Liverpool’s lack of rhythm. That’s something you do want a winger to be able to provide, it’s just that this team doesn’t really provide that. Neither Cody Gakpo nor Mo Salah are particularly quick at this stage – the newcomers feel necessary.
But it won’t be Antoine Semenho. Liverpool have been heavily linked with the Bournemouth star, but he appears destined to join Manchester City – with Sky Sports reporting that the deal should be completed soon.

Fortunately, Liverpool have another option. Probably a better one.
Yan Diomande is available
Sky Sports also reports that Jan Diomande is expected to leave RB Leipzig in 2026. Liverpool have been heavily linked with himThat’s also true, assuming the asking price of £62m is something the club can’t ignore.
Especially as this is much lower than the £87m consistently reported this season. Diomande, who only joined Leipzig in the summer, has shone in the Bundesliga and been linked with a number of elite clubs.
