Ben White now understands what lies ahead for him at Arsenal

There has been no movement at Arsenal during the January transfer window so far, but Ben White continues to be the talk of the town.

Despite rumors of a possible sale, the right-back has made more appearances this season than some expected.

As injuries continue to affect Mikel Arteta’s options at defenders, speculation has begun over the 28-year-old’s future.

Everton have also shown an interest in White this month and now their pursuit has taken a new step.

Ben Jacobs discusses the latest developments in Arsenal’s transfer activity this week on the Highbury Team Podcast. It’s not surprising that he spent some time researching Ben White’s situation.

Reporters first responded to ongoing speculation that White wants to leave. “I don’t know that he’s too eager to leave, but by the same token, if the right offer comes in, I think you’ll find that there are conversations going on between Benjamin White and Arsenal.”

Jacobs also spoke about Everton’s interest, noting that it’s unclear if any transfers will take place this month or in the summer.

The most noteworthy part of Jacobs’ update was his take on White’s stance going forward. “From White’s perspective, I think he understands that regardless of form or health, long term it’s better to start looking elsewhere,” Jacobs said.

“My understanding is he’s going to start thinking about it over the next year to two years,” he added. “Is he going to have the ability to play every week? Is he going to have a chance of retaining his starting spot or will he fall further down the pecking order?

“I don’t think it makes players feel particularly confident about being part of Arsenal, even if they end up winning trophies just for fun.”

It would seem unwise for both parties to strike a deal this winter, with both Arteta and White looking for major trophies for the rest of 2024.

The real question now is what comes next. As more information flows out from sources like Jacobs, we’re getting a clearer picture of how things unfolded.

Arsenal’s valuation headache complicates Ben White’s future

While White may no longer be first choice, he still provides valuable depth to Mikel Arteta, so moving him mid-season would be a risky move.

The bigger problem is his declining market value. When Arsenal decide to sell, they may not see much return on their initial investment.

Transfermarkt reports that White’s value has dropped by €25 million over the past year, from €55 million to just €30 million.

Fewer appearances this season will only further weaken Arsenal’s bargaining position. Not long ago, White was the first name on the roster.

The situation is unlikely to be resolved in January. Both sides would be better off waiting until the summer, when there will be more time to find the right solution.
